(October 6th) Business School Workshop
The Business School Workshop is a collaborative event between various JEC chapters, focusing on providing high school students with insights into business school admissions and financial planning. The purpose is to demystify the college application process, specifically for top-tier institutions like Wharton, and to offer actionable advice on managing college debt. Attendees can expect expert talks from a Wharton professor and a student panel, along with the opportunity to apply for a coveted Wharton internship position.
What to Expect: Participants will gain valuable knowledge on navigating the complexities of college applications and managing financial commitments. The workshop will include interactive Q&A sessions, presentations, and networking opportunities with peers from other JEC chapters. Attendees will leave with a clearer understanding of how to prepare for and succeed in applying to prestigious business schools.
(Late October) Case Competition
The Case Competition is an online event designed to challenge participants with real-world consulting and social impact scenarios. The purpose of the competition is to develop problem-solving skills, encourage teamwork, and provide exposure to case-based learning, a critical aspect of business education.
What to Expect: Teams of four will submit their solutions online, competing for recognition in the top three and top twenty. Participants will engage with a detailed case study, either written by JE or sourced from the Lazaridis School of Business. The competition will be judged by professionals or experienced university students, providing valuable feedback to participants. The event is a fantastic opportunity for students to apply theoretical knowledge to practical problems and to showcase their analytical and presentation skills.
(December - Early February) Economics Essay Writing Contest
The Economics Essay Writing Contest invites students to explore complex economic topics in a structured, competitive environment. The purpose of the contest is to promote critical thinking and writing skills, as well as to foster a deeper understanding of economics among participants. Modeled after the TVO competition, this contest also aims to give students the chance to have their work publicly recognized.
What to Expect: Participants will choose from a list of five provided topics, crafting essays that will be judged for originality, insight, and academic rigor. The contest offers the potential for publication and cash prizes, sponsored by financial institutions, think tanks, and universities. Judges will include both professional economists and university students, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation process. Those who excel will not only gain recognition but also valuable feedback that can aid in their academic and professional journeys.
(April/May) AP and IB Economics Workshop
The AP and IB Economics Workshop is a preparatory session aimed at high school students preparing for their AP and IB Economics exams. The purpose of the workshop is to equip students with the knowledge and strategies needed to excel in their exams, using materials and guidance developed by JE.
What to Expect: Attendees will receive in-depth instruction on key economics concepts, exam tips, and study strategies. The workshop, led by the Director of JE, will include slideshow presentations and comprehensive study guides. This event is designed to be an intensive review session, helping students to consolidate their knowledge and feel confident going into their exams.
(June) Adrenaline Flagship Event
Adrenaline is the premier annual event of the JEC chapter, designed to provide attendees with career insights, networking opportunities, and hands-on experience in business-related challenges. The purpose of Adrenaline is to bring together students, alumni, and industry professionals in a dynamic environment where participants can learn, connect, and compete.
What to Expect: Hosted at the prestigious Globe and Mail Center, Adrenaline will feature alumni panels, career-focused workshops, and interactive case studies or policythons. Potential speakers include notable entrepreneurs and Forbes 30 Under 30 honorees, ensuring a compelling and inspirational lineup. The event will also offer ample opportunities for networking, allowing attendees to build valuable connections that could impact their future careers. With free admission (pending final decision), this event is set to be a highlight of the year, blending education with real-world business experience.
